If your child needs some light at night, you have two broad options: something powered, or something that glows on its own. They behave very differently, and the right answer genuinely depends on the child.
How each one works
LED night lights convert electricity into light. They stay at a constant brightness for as long as they're switched on, and they need a socket, batteries, or a USB cable.
Glow-in-the-dark items use phosphorescent pigment. The pigment absorbs light during the day, stores that energy, and releases it slowly as a soft green-white glow. Nothing is plugged in and nothing is consumed.
Brightness
LEDs win on raw output, and that's not always good. Even a "dim" plug-in light is usually far brighter than a glow item, and brightness at night is the main thing that pushes a child's body clock later.
Glow-in-the-dark output is low from the start and fades over the night. For a child who needs a visual anchor rather than reading light, that fade is a feature: brightest when they're settling, nearly gone by the time they're deeply asleep.
Effect on sleep
Light exposure in the evening, particularly cool blue-white light, is associated with delayed sleep onset. If you go the LED route, look for a warm amber or red-toned bulb and the lowest brightness setting the device offers. Avoid anything that projects moving patterns onto the ceiling for a child who is easily stimulated.
Glow-in-the-dark output is far too dim to be a meaningful light-exposure issue.

The travel point matters more than people expect. A glow item works identically in a hotel, a grandparent's spare room, or a tent. A plug-in light is at the mercy of whatever socket is or isn't next to the bed.
Cost over time
LED night lights are cheap up front but have a failure point — a bulb, a battery compartment, a switch. Glow items have no failure point at all, though the pigment does dim gradually over a period of years of use and washing.
The honest downsides of glow-in-the-dark
- It must be charged in light. A room with blackout blinds that's dark all day will produce a weak glow. Ten to fifteen minutes near a window or under a lamp is usually plenty.
- The glow is brightest in the first half hour and then fades. If your child specifically wakes at 3am and needs light then, a glow item alone won't cover it.
- You can't adjust the brightness.
So which should you buy?
Choose an LED night light if your child needs light to navigate to a bathroom in the middle of the night, or wakes regularly in the small hours.
Choose glow-in-the-dark if the problem is settling — the twenty to forty minutes between lights-out and sleep, which is when most bedtime fear actually lives.
Choose both if you want a dim warm plug-in for the hallway and something soft and glowing in the bed itself.
